Counting His Money

Every once in awhile, Jack wants to know how much money he has. He recently spent most of his bills on a new Lego set. That must be why he turned to the coins in his bank.

Photo Op

Dennis's car was parked out front this afternoon, so Sam got in it. As usual, I had my camera in hand.

Preparing

Most of the kids in town went back to school today. We'll be starting lessons next week, so I've spent much of my free time reading books on formal logic, math, essay writing, art, astronomy and history. I think it's rubbing off on the kids. Today, Luke asked if he could get started on his new math books.

Another Year Gone By

It's hard to believe, but it's true: Luke is now seventeen years old. His arrival in the world was the biggest disruption I've ever known in my life, but he (and each of his five siblings) has been worth all the work, the sacrifice, the joy and the love.

Since I know firsthand how wonderful the vocation of motherhood is, I have to ask for a favor. A mom in one of my online homeschooling groups has had her five young children taken from her by the state, her husband has filed for divorce, and she's ready to give up. Please do me a huge favor and say a prayer for her. Please pray that she finds the strength she needs to fight her battles. Thank you.

Memories of Home

Black-eyed Susans remind me of Mom. She always had them growing in the front yard.

Sam in the Sunlight

I got Sam to stop walking and talking long enough to get a few good shots of him.

Art and Flowers

Bridget and I joined two of our friends at Longfellow's Greenhouses for the Designing Women Art Show. The creativity on display was lovely, and the flowers: gorgeous.

Bubbles in the Sun

This afternoon, Stella asked Luke to take her outside to blow bubbles. Soon enough, a few others had joined them.

Thursdays

Just when you thought this blog was turning into a showcase for Luke's golfing accomplishments ... Stella's back! She'd spend the day in the tub, if I let her.

He Made it to the Semi-Finals

Here are shots of Luke playing his quarter-final match against 16-year-old Reese McFarlane, and his semi-final match against 20-year-old Joe Walp. Luke lost the day's second match, but he's still very happy with his performance in the tournament and psyched to be one of only four players to make it to the semi-finals. Oh, and the last shot (taken through a window in the minivan) is a glimpse of Luke's interview with Kalle Oakes of the Sun Journal. You can read more about the day here.

A Long Day

Luke won his first match in the MESGA Match Play Tournament by winning a one-hole playoff, after splitting the course with his opponent. Therefore, he moved on to another match in the afternoon. He won that in a two-hole playoff. Tomorrow in the quarter finals (at 7:30 in the morning!), he faces another high school student, Reese McFarlane (Luke's nemesis, perhaps?), who took out 13-time Maine Amateur champ Mark Plummer in round one. The winner of the morning match moves on to the semis in the afternoon, which will winnow it all down to two players for Thursday. The sports writer for the Kennebec Journal called and chatted with Luke this evening. Here's the result.

A New Season Begins

The 2013 high school golf season started today, with the first practice of the year. Last week, Luke went to Connecticut with the other five top golfers in Maine and played in the New England Regional High School Boys Team Tournament. Maine came in fourth out of six, and Luke did relatively well, scoring 78, 78, 69 to finish 18th individually. This weekend, he tried to defend his title as the Natanis Men's Club Champion, but finished the two-day tournament in second place, three strokes behind the winner. Luke scored 68, 74. Tomorrow, he heads to Auburn for the MESGA Match Play tournament.

Local Color

Today was one of those days, and I had nothing on the memory card. So, late this afternoon, I headed out to my local greenhouse.
