Boy of Steel

Tomorrow is Halloween, and the kids can talk of little else. This evening, we went to the basement and found the box full of costumes. It looks as though we'll be able to outfit everyone without a trip to the store. Sam, as you can see from this photo, will be Superman, or SuperSam, as we've been affectionately calling him. Here, Luke is helping the boy wonder achieve liftoff. After an hour or two, the Boy of Steel took off his macho duds. I'd better keep track of them, so tomorrow night he's not yelling, "Where's my super suit?!?"

Transparent Parents (and Kids)

We had hoped to get a family picture for our Christmas cards when we went to Rockland last week, but this one isn't it. It just doesn't feel ... substantial enough to me.

Impaled

Do you think Dennis is trying to tell me something about the way I make him feel? Maybe it was that conversation about money that we had just had.

Lighting the Way

The topmost landing of the sweeping, curved staircase at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland proved to be a nice vantage point.

Heartthrob

With Sam's new mullet and those eyes, he reminds me of Rick Springfield in his "Jessie's Girl" days. Sam may look like he's trapped in a maze, but he's really just standing on the stairway of the church that's part of the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland. Yesterday, we all took a field trip to the Farnsworth, where we got to see original paintings by the Wyeths: NC, Andrew and Jamie, works by Alex Katz and other artists, along with some Maine folk art.

Sisters in the Sun

Mom passed away three years ago today. She looks so young and vibrant in this picture. She and her sister Olga (on the right) celebrated a beautiful summer or spring day with their sister Angie at a park in Boston. The silhouettes of their dresses are very flattering and Mom's basket purse is fun. Did you notice Olga's dimple on the left? Maybe that's where Bridget gets hers.

Enlivening the Graveyard

Bridget, Henry and I visited one of Augusta's cemeteries shortly before dusk. I had driven by earlier in the day, after bringing Bridget, Henry and Sam to Sunday School and noticed the trees, which were still covered with leaves as vivid as the colors on a painter's palette. That's when I made my plan to return later with the camera.

Tender Moment

Dennis got this shot of Jack and me. He's sweet when he's asleep.

Prison or Shelter?

Bridget looks pretty content in the lean-to she made in the side yard.

Turbulent

Getting this shot took a number of tries, and I'm not completely satisfied with it. Luke, however, was tired of climbing up and down the ladder and dropping the scrub brush into the bucket.

Apple in Focus

Bridget has created for herself a lean-to and has decorated it with speared crab apples. Here's one of them.

Science in Progress

Luke had been asking to make a baking soda/vinegar rocket for days. When our study of geography brought up the topic of volcanoes, Luke and Bridget made a baking soda/vinegar "volcano" in an empty soda bottle. Taking the bottle outside and capping it to make a rocket was the next logical step. Luke attempted lift-off a number of times. Unfortunately, the rocket never launched.

She Carries a Heavy Load

Bridget takes very good care of her little brother, Jack. She sometimes finds him exasperating, but just one of his hugs erases all of the negative feelings.

Imagination at Work

I took a very similar picture a little more than a year ago. Henry was younger and the tripod was different, but his prodigious imagination was working in both instances.

Stick Throwing

Sam was excited to go swimming when I told him we were going to the beach; he was disappointed when I told him there'd be no swimming. When we actually got there, Sam found plenty to keep himself occupied, including throwing "arrows." What could he do, but throw them? His bow was at home.

At Water's Edge

After dropping Luke at the middle school for soccer practice, the kids and I went to the Readfield Town Beach. They played, explored and managed to stay surprisingly dry. I took pictures. Here, you see Jack with the tripod at the water's edge. If I had not been on top of things, there may have been another picture of the tripod in the water. Thankfully, though, that did not happen.

Benefits

With all the breezy weather of late, God has offered the local milkweed a great relocation package, and this fellow is taking advantage.

A Padawan and His Master

But which is which? Jack is about the right size (and shape? mmmm, no.) for Yoda. His coloring's wrong, but with that hood... Let's just leave it at:
"Padawan."
"Master."

Lovely

What a great picture of Bridget. I was putting the camera away after downloading some photos and decided to snap a few shots of the kids. As usual, I got many pictures of Luke making goofy faces and many pictures of Bridget looking lovely. Here's one of them.

A Bucket Full of Color

The kids and I spent time outside collecting leaves to iron between sheets of wax paper (it preserves the leaves). Sam afforded me this colorful shot by stepping back and holding the bucket steady.
