Luke (wearing number 3) had a varsity game at home today, and he actually got off the bench to play second base in the final inning. (Don't worry, he gets lots of playing time in the JV games, and has a batting average around 700.) The boys were down, 11-10, going into the second half of the final inning, but they scored two great runs for the win.

Introduction to Poetry

A few days ago, I read "Introduction to Poetry" by Billy Collins and loved it. Today I set up the shot the for it and used it my 365-day photography challenge. Here it is:

I ask them to take a poem
and hold it up to the light
like a color slide

or press an ear against its hive.

I say drop a mouse into a poem
and watch him probe his way out,

or walk inside the poem's room
and feel the walls for a light switch.

I want them to water-ski
across the surface of the poem
waving at the author's name on the shore.

But all they want to do
is tie the poem to a chair with rope
and torture a confession out of it.

They begin beating it with a hose
to find out what it really means.

You got lots of pictures of Stella yesterday, but you get two more today. She asked for pigtails, but got upset when Bridget didn't use all of the elastics. Therefore, I stepped in and created nine clumps around her noggin. She then looked in the mirror and smiled. I said, "You're so cute." She replied, "Everybody knows that!"

When I returned from a trip to the high school to get Luke to the bus for his baseball game, Stella was very happy to see me. She came outside while I shot some photos of flowers and her. Of course, she decided she needed help in getting down the front stairs. "Mom, hold my hand!" she called. When I got there and offered mine, she said, "You're the greatest." She got a big hug for that comment.

That Crazy Woman with a Camera

I wonder if the people around town refer to me as "That crazy woman with a camera." Today, on my way to pick up Luke at the driving range, I didn't even bother getting out of the car. I just rolled down windows as necessary, sometimes pulling over, but mostly just stopping in the road. Don't worry, I checked my rearview mirror frequently.

I almost never sleep through the night. Stella and Jack, and sometimes Caddie, make sure of that. On Sunday, whenever I awoke, I heard the rain pounding the house and the wind roaring. At one point, I awoke to some sort of crashing sound, and I soon drifted off, wondering, "What could that have been?" I got my answer when I got out of bed in the morning and pushed up the shade. Sometime in the night, a birch tree and the backyard fence met on unfriendly terms. Later in the day, Jack went outside to survey the damage.

Time to Make the Donuts

Luke discovered this recipe for donuts a month or two ago and has been pestering me about making them. So today, with his baseball game rained out, I decided to acquiesce. Luke created them all on his own, start to finish (except for cutting out the holes, which Bridget did, and cleanup, which I did — of course). They were surprisingly good. (I write "surprisingly" because gluten-free flour seldom behaves like wheat flour.)

Where Did You Come From?

A couple of years ago, I planted daffodils in the flowerbed out front. There's a lone daff blooming in the woods on the northeast side of the house, and then there's this trio out near the road, in from of the azalea bushes. I'm not quite sure how they got there, but they are the prettiest ones in the yard.

We missed the blooming of azaleas the year we moved in, but I was very pleased when they flowered in the front yard the following April. This year, they look as lovely as ever.

Apple Blossoms

Last week, when Bridget and I went to town for her orthodontist appointment, I noticed that many of the apple trees were in bloom, but I didn't have my camera. Today, I found a reason to head to town and made sure that the Olympus was in the car.

We all went to Luke's baseball game this afternoon. Stella "ran the bases" (actually, she went from first to home) before we left the field.

Mmmm ...... Chocolate

I make devil's food cake a lot — so often, in fact, that I know the Better Homes and Gardens recipe by heart (but I use Better Batter Gluten Free Flour instead of the wheaten variety). Today I decided to get fancy with it. I topped each piece with a swirl of chocolate frosting and a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup wedge.
