Grey Today

I had just enough lilac paint to cover two walls in the kitchen. The two other walls (the ones with cabinets on them) will get the grey paint we bought for the master bathroom, but never used.

Vine Ripening

Our tomato plant experiment (buying plants instead of seeds and putting them out front among the flowers) is turning into a success. We've picked and eaten about a half dozen of the homegrown beauties thus far and are looking forward to more.

You Put Your Feet Where?

Last week, Dennis mentioned that he'd like to paint our mess of a living room. Knowing that it's someday slated for demolition, I'd always tried to ignore it — same with the kitchen. Yesterday, I had a change of heart and decided to paint at least two of the kitchen walls, using the lilac paint we bought for the stairway but decided against using there. I got most of one wall painted (we have to move the hutch prior to finishing it), but before I had the brush put away, Stella had managed to place not one, but both, of her feet on a freshly painted wall. I'm glad I hadn't washed the brush.

Favorite Colors

Luke loves Natanis for the greens. I love it for the pinks, purples, whites, yellows, reds ...

It was a busy day for Stella. First, in her role as doctor, she had to examine a number of patients, including a doll, a teacup, a wagon and me. She also posed with the first tomato from our "garden," watered the driveway, instructed me to pick a rose so she could give it to me, and performed a song-and-dance routine on the bottom step: her stage.

Oh, you didn't know she was a doctor? Neither did I, but she received some training somewhere. Here are the lines she learned: "I checked her earrings." "There. She's all repaired." "Mom, you're going to get a checkout." "I'm Dr. Stell-A!" "Now I have to look in your leg. Hmmmm..... Yep. Looks fine."

Climb on Up

Have you ever heard of a fish ladder? I hadn't until I did a little research after shooting this ladder at Webber Pond last year. I was out there this morning and got some new shots. I also did a little more research and found this interesting tidbit.

Artist in Training

It has been a day. I had hoped to get the trim around the washer/dryer platform painted first thing this morning, so I could get out of my gross painting togs and shower. I got clean around 3:00. One holdup was setting up Stella with her supplies. When I mentioned my painting task, she declared that she wanted in on the action.

A First for Jack

Today, Jack lost his first tooth, and he just went upstairs to put it under his bed. I love that sweet boy.

After lunch, Dennis started the process of hanging the studio's one wall cabinet. I needed a nap. So while I slept, Dennis enlisted the help of Luke and Bridget, and I awoke to a beautiful site. (Dennis adding my old typewriter to the vignette is a nice touch, don't you think?)

They Are Here

I'm still grinning about these gorgeous cherry cabinets and desk for my laundry room/studio (along with a piece or five for the powder room and master bath). Cabinetmaker Bob Clark Jr. and his son delivered them around noon. With any luck, the glass-fronted cabinet will be hanging on the wall behind my desk at this time tomorrow.

Cauliflower Pizza

A few months ago, I pinned a recipe for a pizza made with a cauliflower crust (low carb), and decided to try it this evening. It was OK. It basically tasted like a pizza, but the crust fell apart and had sort of a mealy texture. It's not something I'll make again, but if any of you want to give it go, the recipe is here.

Stella's style gets more eclectic all the time, and today she was going for a Taylor Swift vibe. (Stella is a fan, after all.) The ensemble she put together consisted of a pink and yellow princess dress filled out with a tutu and grounded with brown and pink cowgirl boots. Her accessories, though, really pull the look together: a chunky, pastel heart necklace, and dangling pearl and wire earrings worn in the newest way: hooked over the tops of her ears. Such a fabulous outfit demanded lots of photos, in color and monotone. To see the shots chosen for her album cover, please click here and here.

Editor's Note: Stella must have decided that tutu made her look fat, so she removed it before her photo session.

Get in Line

Yesterday, I introduced the kids to Khan Academy, a free online site filled with teaching videos and exercises on subjects like math and science. I created user profiles for most of us and showed the kids how to get started. Since then, Luke has logged more than two hours in math and gathered enough points to unlock two levels of avatars; Bridget now understands long division; Henry has repeated any exercise he has not completed perfectly; Sam has been delving into basic math concepts, Jack gave counting exercises a go, and I cruise through sets of problems whenever I get a turn at the computer. Getting a turn at the computer: that's the hard part.

Luke shot a 70 yesterday and was anxious to get back out on the course. I, however, have had an excruciating case of sciatica since Saturday (when I complete the Spruce Point Inn survey, I will let the owners know that it may be time to invest in firmer matresses) and was in no hurry to spend an hour driving him to and from the course. He did some chipping out front and later headed out to the driving range with Dennis.

A Quick Trip

On Friday, we drove down to Boothbay Harbor for two nights at Spruce Point Inn and Resort. We enjoyed the company of my aunt, uncle and cousins on Friday evening, then spent much of Saturday in the two pools, the game room, and patio overlooking the Atlantic, where Dennis and I got some great shots of a beautiful sunset. We also went downtown, then got lunch at the Lobster Dock (where Bobby Flay once lost a crab cake throw-down).
