Happy Day

This is what Dennis and I looked like 15 years ago today. The photos below are pretty accurate depictions of our lives now. Note that he and I do not appear in the same photo. There are at least five good reasons for that.

New Fodder for Creativity

For my birthday, the kids got me a gift certificate to Your Maine Stamper in Winthrop. On Thursday, Bridget and I decided we needed to get out of the house. We visited Lydia at Your Maine Stamper and picked up new stamps, stencils and glitter glue. When we got home, we got creative. Here are the two cards I made.

A Respite

January has been a very, long, cold month, and I need to look at something other than bare trees and white snow. This iris should do nicely.

Sleepin' Sammy Ruffing

We've never been big on routine: dinnertime; bedtime, etc. Last night, we ate at 9 p.m.; we usually manage to get dinner on the table by 8:30; and on a good night, we eat by 7:30. All of the kids are generally in bed by 11, but you just never know. When Sam's tired, he goes to bed, often without a word to anyone. It's a beautiful thing.

Another Page for Henry

I cleaned out my studio last weekend and came across piles of photos I had pulled out to scrap. I decided to just dive in and start creating pages. Photos of Batman Henry were at the top of the stack, so he got another page. I love the finished product, which is this:

Here is a close-up of the information page found in the dossier:

A tab on the triangular pocket reads: "Other Known Disguises", and tucked into the pocket are the following photos:

Birthday Girl

Since today is my birthday, I'm posting photos from my childhood. This is my sister, Maureen, and me on the first day of school. Of course, neither one of us was going to school, but our brother, Tom, was. It was September of 1970, so Maureen was nearly four years old. I was cruising towards three.
In the this photo, from 1971, Maureen and I are hanging out with our "big dolls." Hers was Cindy; mine was Cathy. Both were named after our beautiful, teenage neighbors down the street.
Here are the three of us, in 1971. Maureen and Tom had been elected Queen and King of the Playground. Not only did they get crowns, sashes and trophies, they got to be part of the town parade, riding down main street in a GTO convertible. Of course, I was jealous.

A Trio

Henry and his friends (and Dennis) spent nearly an hour outside, celebrating Henry's birthday. Since Bridget spends plenty of time with the boys in her family, she had no desire to hang out with five more. Quinn, the sister of party guest Jack (not Little Boy Blue, a different Jack), came over as Bridget's special guest. When our Jack saw Quinn, he gave her a hug.

Happy Birthday Henry

Henry turns 8 years old today. He's about as happy as he was in this photo, taken at 7.5 months of age. Tomorrow, five of his closest friends will be here to play in the snow, toast marshmellows over our new fire pit (purchased exclusively for Henry's party), enjoy s'mores and hot chocolate, eat cake and assemble the newest Bionicle figures from Lego. With temperatures expected to rise all the way to 14 degrees, Henry and his guests should last at least 15 minutes outside.

Happy Birthday, Henry! I love you.

On Sunday, I ventured outside to get some shots for next year's Christmas cards and snapped a picture of this light fixture. It was nothing special, so I decided to play around in Photoshop. Here is the result of adding palette knife and plastic wrap filters and adjusting hue and saturation.

It Seems So Long Ago

It's hard to believe that this is how our house looked about a year ago. It was nearly as cold then as it is now. I'm surprised Dennis never said, as fathers are wont, "Greg, close that wall! Do you think I'm paying good money to heat the outside?"

I seldom find time to scrapbook, but this weekend, I got five minutes here, ten there, and was able to put together a page for Henry's scrapbook. Here's a close-up. The page features the invitation I made for Henry's birthday party this coming Saturday.

Golden Boy and Silver Child

More than a year ago, I bought a LumiQuest Promax System, which is set of diffusers that attaches to the camera's external flash. Neither Dennis nor I have used it much, but tonight, I decided to experiment. The first photo of Jack was shot with the gold metallic insert, which "adds a warm, sunset tone to the scene and is useful for outdoor fill flash." The second photo of Jack was taken with the silver metallic insert, which "adds a specular look to highlights and it is particularly useful for weddings." (Yes, that word should be "specular." I thought it was a typo, but when I looked it up, I discovered that specular means "mirrorlike".)
