It's Halloween

Here's our motley crew of trick-or treaters: Paul McCartney (Sam); James Crockett of Miami Vice (Luke); a little princess (Stella); a ladybug (Bridget); Robin (Jack) and Robin Hood (Henry). And of course, there's Dennis.

A Fan

Today, Dennis surprised, and thrilled, Bridget with Taylor Swift's newest CD and a T-shirt.

Baking Together

Stella requested chocolate chip cookies today, so I suggested that she make some with Luke. They both happily complied.

Stella's siblings were very excited about watching The Avengers this evening, as it arrived in the mail from Netflix today. The Thursday Girl, however, was less than thrilled with the idea.

Apple Cider Quest

Luke had a hankering for donuts this morning. I suggested he try the Apple Cider Donuts recipe on No Gluten, No Problem, except that there was a problem: we had no apple cider. The beauty of the day, though, inspired me to rectify the situation by walking to the market of our local orchard and buying a jug of cider. Bridget, Henry, Sam and the camera came with me.

Taking the Bull by the Horn

As I stood next to my burgundy red minivan, with the camera up to my eye, looking at these bulls through the viewfinder, I contemplated the size and sharpness of those horns and thought to myself, "Maybe I really am crazy."

Today was a beauty, so Stella and I put on our new boots and headed outside. At first, she was upset about Blue Bowser losing the secret key (?), but — thankfully — she got over it pretty quickly.

Dennis really likes his chainsaw. On Saturday, he stacked, oh-so-nicely, the wood he previously cut and split. Of course, we have no wood-burning fireplace or stove.

In other Saturday news, Luke played in the State High School Golf Tournament and tied for second with a score of 77 (including a one-stroke penalty for some confusion over a rule). Here's the article.

Two of My Boys

Today's word at Call and Response is "father." I got this sweet shot of Jack and his Dad, but posted something different over there.

The Sparkly Stuff

Did you know that I love glitter? Dennis doesn't — love it, that is.

When my brother, sister and I were growing up, one of our most memorable Christmas gifts was a puppet called Hugo, Man of a Thousand Faces. I just thought of that, for some reason.

A New Hangout

Luke left the house before I even got out of bed this morning. His golf instructor picked him up, and they went to Natanis for 18 holes. Luke got home around 1:30 and asked me to take him to the country club for one more round of golf. Today, though, he wanted to be dropped off on the back nine, instead of at the clubhouse. Doing so left me heading in the wrong direction. I continued straight, figuring I'd turn right at the antiques shop, but I had my camera and decided to turn at the cottages near the lake. I had never been down that road. I got home about an hour-and-a-half later, after: standing in the rain to photograph a grey heron and trying in vain to capture (in pixels) any one of the many fish jumping out of the water about 20 feet from where I stood — I caught a splash or two; taking some shots of a cemetery I had never seen; and driving on past the house because, just as I got home, Luke called my cell phone, saying he didn't feel like playing in a downpour today.
