Thoughtful Neighbors

Back in December, my neighbor Jan (who will not reveal her age but once dated a contemporary of my mother's) called and asked me to create about 25 Christmas cards for her. She loved the ones I mailed out last year and wanted the same ones. I charged her $.50 each (for a total of $12.50), but when she paid me, all she had was a twenty. I delivered the cards while she and her very sweet and patient husband Gilbert were out for their daily constitutional. Along with the cards, I left her $7 in change. Since then, I've heard more than once about how much she loved the cards and how upset she was at me for not keeping the whole twenty.

Fast forward to today: I answered a knock at the door to discover Gilbert standing there. He handed me these two beautiful roses, saying, "She says to give you these." He then put two bags of Hershey's Kisses in my arms, with an "And these," followed by an "And this," as he slipped me an envelope. I thanked him profusely, but added, "You guys didn't have to do this." Gilbert just turned around and waved away my protests.

And what did I find in the envelope? Seven dollars.
